CONSERVATION   STRATEGY: ENDANGERED/RAPIDLY DECREASING.

Necessary to maintain marginal shallows free of competing vegetation in the ponds that it already occurs in. Can be readily eliminated by dredging. Needs silty bottom. The newly established Crassula helmsii competes with it for space in many sites. Necessary to take active conservation measures throughout the U.K. to stem the rapid decline in the number of  localities.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________STATUS NOTES:

Native. A small rather non-descript aquatic of silty marginal shallows in ponds, easily overlooked for a mud form of a water crowfoot. Declining rapidly. Estimated 40% decrease in 10 km sqs in England between 1962 (Atlas of British Flora) and 1989 (BSBI Monitoring Scheme). Well established in several Epping Forest ponds, but very vulnerable to dredging (see entries for Epping Lower Forest lake, Earl's Path and Goldings Hill ponds). Currently only known from Oak Pond High Beach, Epping Forest where it is likely to be lost due to Crassula helmsii.
